About the Role

The Mechanical & HVAC Warehouse Operations Manager will lead the company's central warehouse and material logistics operations, serving as a critical link between shop operations, project management, and field production.

This position is responsible for ensuring that piping, sheet metal, HVAC equipment, tools, consumables, and other project materials are properly received, organized, tracked, and delivered to job sites safely, accurately, and on schedule.

The ideal candidate is an experienced warehouse and logistics professional who understands the unique demands of commercial HVAC, mechanical piping, plumbing, and industrial construction. This person should be equally comfortable managing people, coordinating vendors, improving processes, controlling inventory, and solving time-sensitive field logistics challenges.

A major focus of the role will be developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) that improve warehouse efficiency, material accountability, fleet utilization, and project support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the central warehouse, including receiving, storage, staging, picking, and distribution.
  • Coordinate material logistics between the warehouse, fabrication/shop operations, project management, and field teams.
  • Ensure piping, sheet metal, ductwork, HVAC equipment, tools, and consumables are available when and where projects require them.
  • Establish and maintain inventory-control processes that minimize shortages, excess inventory, loss, and unnecessary purchasing.
  • Develop, document, and enforce warehouse and logistics SOPs.
  • Supervise warehouse personnel and establish clear expectations for productivity, safety, organization, and accountability.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Field Superintendents to anticipate upcoming material and equipment requirements.
  • Manage relationships with local supply houses, equipment vendors, and other material suppliers.
  • Review purchase orders, invoices, deliveries, and related documentation for accuracy.
  • Support vendor negotiations and purchasing decisions to achieve competitive pricing and reliable delivery.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and job-costing information within applicable software systems.
  • Implement systems for tracking tools, equipment, consumables, and other company assets.
  • Oversee fleet coordination, vehicle/equipment availability, maintenance scheduling, and utilization.
  • Coordinate delivery schedules and routes to support multiple active construction projects.
  • Ensure warehouse activities and material-handling practices comply with applicable OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Oversee safe rigging, loading, unloading, storage, and movement of mechanical materials and equipment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and better support field production.
  • Serve as a proactive problem-solver when material, equipment, delivery, or logistics issues threaten project schedules.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of warehouse operations and inventory-control experience, preferably within HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, industrial contracting, or a related construction environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Commercial HVAC equipment
    • Mechanical piping systems
    • Pipe, fittings, valves, and related materials
    • Sheet metal and ductwork components
    • Mechanical trade tools and equipment
    • Construction consumables
  • Proven experience supervising warehouse or logistics personnel.
  • Strong understanding of trade safety practices, including OSHA compliance, rigging, loading/unloading, and material handling.
  • Hands-on experience with purchase orders, invoice approvals, vendor coordination, and supplier negotiations.
  • Experience working with local construction supply houses and mechanical/HVAC vendors.
  • Familiarity with inventory-management, procurement, ERP, or job-costing software.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Field Superintendents, technicians, fabricators, vendors, and company leadership.
  • Working knowledge of fleet maintenance management and route planning.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to create structure, improve processes, and hold teams accountable.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be more than a traditional warehouse manager. They will understand how warehouse decisions directly affect construction productivity, labor utilization, project schedules, and profitability.

You should be comfortable walking into a busy warehouse, identifying inefficiencies, establishing systems, and creating accountability. You should also be able to communicate effectively with experienced tradespeople and project leadership and understand the urgency that comes with supporting active construction sites.

Experience in commercial HVAC, mechanical contracting, plumbing, process piping, industrial construction, or sheet metal is highly preferred.
