Compensation

Base salary: $90,000–$115,000, depending on experience.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Construction Project Engineer to support a high-profile Department of Energy project in Amarillo, Texas.

This position will support the delivery of complex mechanical construction scopes, including HVAC, mechanical piping, and sheet metal systems. The Project Engineer will work closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, design teams, vendors, and the client to ensure the work is completed safely, accurately, and according to schedule.

The ideal candidate has at least two years of construction or engineering experience, an engineering degree, and a strong interest in developing a long-term career in mechanical construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the project management team with the planning and execution of HVAC, mechanical piping, and sheet metal scopes.
• Assist with project documentation, scheduling, procurement, cost tracking, and subcontractor coordination.
• Review mechanical drawings, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and contract requirements.
• Prepare, submit, and track requests for information, submittals, change documentation, and material approvals.
• Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and field personnel.
• Track equipment and material procurement to ensure deliveries support the construction schedule.
• Assist with mechanical equipment, piping, ductwork, and sheet metal coordination.
• Participate in project meetings and communicate action items to the appropriate team members.
• Maintain accurate project logs, including RFIs, submittals, procurement items, change orders, and closeout documentation.
• Support quality-control inspections and ensure installed work complies with drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and project standards.
• Assist with project cost tracking, forecasting, and change-order management.
• Review subcontractor and vendor documentation for accuracy and completeness.
• Support testing, startup, commissioning, punch-list completion, and project closeout.
• Help identify scheduling, coordination, constructability, and procurement risks before they affect project delivery.
• Follow all site-specific safety, security, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, construction engineering, construction management, or a related engineering discipline.
• At least two years of experience in construction, project engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
• Experience or working knowledge involving HVAC, mechanical piping, plumbing, or sheet metal systems.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Ability to work onsite in Amarillo, Texas.
• Ability to satisfy all site-access, security, and employment requirements associated with a Department of Energy project.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working for a mechanical contractor, general contractor, or engineering firm.
• Previous experience supporting government, industrial, manufacturing, data center, energy, or other highly regulated projects.
• Familiarity with HVAC equipment, ductwork, sheet metal fabrication, hydronic piping, process piping, and mechanical system installation.
• Experience with RFIs, submittals, procurement logs, change orders, cost tracking, and project closeout.
• Familiarity with construction software such as Procore, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, or similar platforms.
• Understanding of BIM/VDC coordination and mechanical system clash detection.
• EIT certification or interest in pursuing professional engineering credentials is a plus.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, local position based onsite in Amarillo, Texas. The Project Engineer will work in both office and active construction-site environments while supporting a high-profile Department of Energy project.

The position is intended for someone who wants to develop their mechanical construction expertise and grow into increased project management responsibility.
